Sapphire Creations Dance Workshop is a premier experimental dance company based in Kolkata and the only one of its kind in Eastern India performing regularly and popularly in festivals and arts events in India and abroad.

Born in August 1992 of a group of young minds who came together to grow from a youthful venture to a dynamic contemporary modern dance ensemble, the workshop is the only one of its kind in Eastern India. It is a perpetual whirl of thought and activity where ideas continuously flow in to nurture a creative conflict giving birth to a dance form that is radical, modern, unique and expressive of contemporary concerns. Sapphire strives to integrate in its dance an awareness of tradition, a dimension of experimentation, an urge to entertain and a purpose to provoke consciousness to inspire us to reach brighter horizons.

When Sapphire began in August 1992, there were few takers for what we had to offer. There was criticism and abuse, accusations of sensationalism and ‘bad’ culture.

But we found friends; young people who discovered the workshop as a place to meet, interact, explore their bodies and minds, to breathe life into ideas that could go on stage as experimental works of art offering the audience a true glimpse of their own urban lives in the 20 th century.

Thirteen years past, after acclaimed performances in most national dance festivals and important international tours, pioneers of a radical innovative dance idiom, we feel our most important achievement is that Sapphire is still a workshop, a moving cycle of youth, energy and ideas, giving birth to a movement that continues to inspire and incorporate more and more people.
